Kikokushijo Academy is delighted to announce that we will be holding our very first JH/HS Speech Competition this Fall! This free event is open to all current JH/HS students from across our campuses.

Students will be given the opportunity to show off their speaking skills in one or more of the following categories: Prose & Poetry, Elevator Pitch, and Traditional Speech. These speech styles were practiced as part of the August curriculum, where students learned how to truly Speak Like a Star!

During this competition, along with becoming more confident in speech giving, students will also have a chance to win some incredible prizes. Each student will be judged on a predetermined rubric. Students who enter all three categories will have a better chance at winning the overall grand prizes. Prizes include trophies, medals, certificates of participation, and more. These prizes will be awarded on the day of the competition during the awards ceremony.

The theme for this year’s JH/HS Speech Competition is “Unity”. Students should use this as the basis for their presentations.

Details:

  • Location: KA Meguro Building A
  • Date: Monday, October 19 (National Holiday - Sports Day)
  • Time
    Doors Open: 12:30 p.m.
    Start: 1:00 p.m.
    End: 4:00 p.m.

Important!

  • Students must participate in the Traditional Speech category.
  • Students can also participate in the Prose & Poetry or Elevator Pitch categories. These categories are optional, but will help students increase their chances of winning the grand prizes.
  • Time limits for each category:
    Traditional Speech: 5 minutes
    Prose & Poetry: 3 minutes
    Elevator Pitch: 60-90 seconds
  • On the registration form, please indicate which categories your child would like to join.
  • Student entries must be uploaded to KA Connect prior to the competition. More information about the submission process and deadlines will be announced at a later date to students who sign up for the competition.

How to Sign-up:

  • The sign-up period for the competition is from August 18 (12 p.m. JST) to October 6 (JST).  *Deadline extended!*
  • Please use the form in the invitation email to register.
  • Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If more than one student wants to apply, multiple form submissions will be necessary (one form is valid for one person only).
  • Parent permission is required to sign up.
  • If you wish to register after the sign-up period has ended, please contact your school as soon as possible.

Notes:

Family members of participating students are allowed to watch the competition. Registration forms will be sent out at a later date. Please note that we may limit the amount of family members who can attend due to room capacity limitations.

Participants should stay for the entirety of the competition, and audience members are also encouraged to stay until the end.

For DL Students:

We would like to encourage DL students to attend our in-person event if possible. However, we understand that this is not feasible for some families, so we will hold a separate online competition for such students.

For this competition, DL students can submit a video for each category that they would like to participate in by 12:59 p.m. (JST) on October 14, 2024. As a reminder, the Traditional Speech category is mandatory for participation. The videos will be judged with a rubric that is separate from the in-person competition, and winners will be announced by October 25th.

Prizes will include digital gift certificates and a digital certificate of participation. Unfortunately, there will not be any physical prizes, trophies, or medals provided for students who enter into the video-only competition.

Videos can be submitted through KA Connect, and winners will be announced approximately one week after the submission deadline. More details on the submission process will be announced soon to students participating in the competition.
