The KA Miracle

The KA Miracle

For nearly a decade, KA has been the top English Support School for returnees in Japan. No other school has helped as many returnees achieve their English goals, whatever they may be. Just look at our record:

In the past three years alone, more than 350 children have passed Eiken 2, 250 passed pre-1, and 250 passed level 1. For junior high school juken, KA is the top test support school. On average, more than half of the returnees accepted at Shoei, Senzoku, Hiroo, Kaetsu, Shib-Shibu, Shibu-Maku, Kygoyokusha, and Keio have studied at KA. Many of the youngest UNATE A and Special A successful examines also come from KA. In the past six years, KA has helped students pass universities such as Yale, Stanford, Princeton, UCLA, Tokyo University, Keio University, and Waseda University. KA has also helped to support “Domestic Kikokushijo,” students with no experience with English outside of Japan, but who through hard work and our support have managed to achieve native level English ability.

How does KA do it? Why does KA work?
It’s simple: KA takes a holistic approach to teaching English. Unlike most “cram” schools who only have students take practice test after practice test, KA seeks to build up our students’ entire “student identity”. Here’s what we focus on at KA:

Organizational Skills:

Returnees committed to developing their English while at the same time catching up with Japanese and math, must learn to use their time wisely. Regular homework, a study schedule, a study log, and consistent encouragement from KA teachers, help students to learn positive habits that will help to organize their lives.

Personal Strength:

To achieve academic success, students must learn to overcome self-doubt, frustration, and fatigue. To this end, KA helps students set and achieve goals that become incrementally more challenging week by week, so that our students learn to believe in themselves and their ability to learn and succeed.

Intellectual Curiosity and Critical Thinking:

We encourage our students to follow the news, to learn about the world and its history, and to think deeply about literature and human motivations. Success with reading, writing, speaking, and listening, requires a substrate of general knowledge as well as a logical mind. Our program and energetic teachers instill in our students an enthusiasm for learning that helps them to become knowledgeable and curious about people and the world we live in.

Friendships, Support, and Motivation:

It’s important for students to know why English is so vital to their lives. Having English-speaking friends and the support of caring teachers at KA help to remind children that English is more than an academic subject. KA Events such as our Christmas Party, Spring Event, and our Movie Nights are great opportunities for students to interact in English so they keep their interest in English alive.

Productive English Skills:

KA encourages our students to write, write, and write. Our essay-writing program is simply the best in Japan, if not the world. Students at KA are also encouraged to speak in English not only in class, but also in our lounge and library and at all KA functions.

Reading:

It’s simple—students who read manage to improve their English while living in Japan. That’s why KA has regular reading assignments, book reports, and a library stocked with thousands of popular books for children and teenagers.

Test-Taking Skills

KA teaches our students to take tests intelligently, using a variety of common techniques as well as a few techniques invented right here at KA.

The Details:

KA is serious about grammar, spelling, punctuation. We also care about manners and classroom behavior. We teach our students to respect the school, their teachers, their classmates, and themselves. We teach them to take pride in their work and in everything that they do. And somehow, we manage to do this in a friendly way that makes kids smile.

Preparing our students for life
At KA, we think of English study as more than just a subject—it is a tool for self-enrichment that allows children to develop their communication skills as well as their characters and minds. KA students grow up to become intelligent, curious, knowledgeable, creative, and cooperative bilingual citizens of Japan and of the international community. In short, KA works not only because we’re expert at preparing our students for exams, but because we prepare our students for life.
